Government Bans AltBalaji, Ullu & Others Over Obscene Content
Some OTT platforms such as AltBalaji and Ullu have been banned by the Indian government because of the existence of obscene content. Distribution of these websites is banned across the country after an offense of decency regulations under the OTT regulation. The ban was directed to the service providers by the authorities who instructed the internet providers to instigate the ban as soon as possible.
Highlights:
- AltBalaji, Ullu, and other specified platforms are banned effective immediately.
- The ban results from confirmed violations of decency norms and obscenity laws.
- Internet service providers must block access to these platforms.
- Authorities identified persistent hosting of explicit material on these services.
- This action demonstrates stricter enforcement of OTT regulation.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting verified the breach of the IT Rules by these platforms due to containing vulgar and sexually explicit content. The authorities added that the content violated the legal norms in the Indian OTT regulatory framework. The ruling came after consideration of certain breaches of content.
The restricted platforms had been warned of non-compliance before. Such total prohibition shows much active measure as it is under the modern regulation policy towards OTT. The implementation has a direct effect on the activities of the platforms that are affected.
Such a ban is an indication that the government is keen to strictly impose content regulations using OTT regulation. It highlights the need to have all the platforms abide by the decency regulations. The imposition of regulation on any OTT services in the future violating rules will be done in a similar manner by setting up the OTT regulation.
